Results of Our Representative Questionnaire Survey
Following our 2022 survey, in 2023 we once again sought the opinions of our users on investor motivation, and regarding the services provided by TokePortal.com, and the development of available market segments. The questionnaire covered a range of topics including past experiences, legal knowledge, and future plans, encompassing aspects such as loan and real estate-focused crowdfunding, willingness to take risks, and satisfaction with the current services of the TokePortal.com platform. We would like to thank the respondents for taking the time and effort to respond, and we will be fulfilling the promised small gifts this month.

Investor Strategy, Motivations, Risk-Taking
As investors are at the heart of crowdfunding, understanding their needs is crucial for campaign owners as well as for TokePortal.com. Based on the survey results, the following six factors can be identified:
- Returning Investors: 75% have multiple investments on TokePortal.com.
- Multiple Investors: 71% have an investment portfolio. Indicating a higher than average willingness to take risks compared to the general Hungarian population, 71% of respondents have owned shares in publicly traded companies, 41% have held cryptocurrencies, and 56% have had investments in investment funds or ETFs. 75% have previously invested through TokePortal.com.
- Diversification: 56% mostly invest in safer assets with a smaller amount of riskier ones, while 24% primarily hold riskier assets.
- Patient Investors: 62% trust in making a profitable exit over a period of 5 years or more from their crowdfunding investments, although 18% expect to realize profits sooner.
- Realistic in Expected Returns: Considering the whole crowdfunding investment portfolio and statistically expected loss rates, 40% expect an annual return below 10%, 22% between 10 and 20%, and 38% expect over 20%.
- Significant Altruistic Motivations: Only 47% of respondents consider high returns as one of the biggest advantages of crowdfunding, whereas 68% prioritize supporting local startups and small businesses, and gathering information about them. This reflects the practice of impact investing.
Investment Sectors and Services
We asked our users’ opinions on some of our current services and potential future development plans:
- Industry Preferences: Top interest lies in IT and Food. 78% of respondents are interested in information technology, within which 64% in AI technology, 55% in fintech, and 36% would like to see more from the real estate sector and technology on TokePortal.com. There is also significant interest in other technologies (HRtech, insurtech), and in line with international trends, considerable interest in reform nutrition and sustainability.
- Secondary Market Interest: There’s significant interest in introducing a secondary market, but with varying motivations: 47% of respondents would like to buy shares from startups with closed campaigns if there were a secondary market, 26% would actively trade startup shares, and 12% seek quicker exits by selling their shares. TokePortal.com will soon be authorized to establish a secondary market with the ECSPR licence.
- Interest in International Investment Opportunities: 81% of our investors would like to see and invest in startups outside Hungary on TokePortal.com, with 30% primarily interested in Hungarian-founded companies.
- Introduction of Loan-Based Campaigns – Peer-to-Peer Lending: 84% of respondents are interested in peer-to-peer loans to companies, but 28% insist that bonds should be convertible into shares later. (Since the new law communicated as a reform in 2023, which allows startups to take convertible loans, immediately became limited to 150 M Ft per investor without a permission from the National Bank of Hungary, TokePortal.com’s ECSPR license solves the need for separate licensing up to 5 M EUR annually!)
- 11. TokePortal.com Newsletters: 48% of our users regularly, and 44% occasionally, read the newsletter. (The newsletter’s average opening rate has been consistently over 40% for years, with some reaching over 75%.)
- Demand for More Detailed News on Campaigns and More Startup News: 57% would like to see more content about specific news of campaigns, and 47% want to learn more about Hungarian and international startups, regardless of their participation in crowdfunding.
- Legal Awareness: Basic knowledge of the laws framing crowdfunding is general among the respondents.
In this survey, we explored in more detail one of this year’s (but not the only) development directions, the expected success of launching real estate-targeted campaigns.
- Interest in Investing in Various Types of Real Estate: Investors would invest in 7 different types of real estate as follows:
- Investors focus on returns, the past of the real estate developer, and the location of the property: For investments in real estate-based assets, 86% prioritize calculated ROI, 82% the past of the real estate developer company, and 78% the location of the property.
- No cannibalism: startup and real estate-targeted campaigns coexist well: 45% would invest more on TokePortal.com if there were also opportunities for real estate investment. Importantly, 34% stated they would split their additional investment between startup and real estate projects. Consequently, the introduction of real estate-targeted projects would positively impact startup projects too.
